Medication overuse headache: Updating of the French recommendations regarding the treatment strategies

Regular and frequent use of analgesics acute antimigraine drugs can increase the frequency headache, induce transition from episodic to chronic migraine or medication-overuse headache (MOH). The one-year prevalence this condition is between 1% 2% in Europe, provoking substantial burden. MOH more prevalent people with comorbid depression, anxiety, other pain conditions. This paper aims at presenting an updating French recommendations regarding treatments strategies. Prior recommendations, published 2014, were written French. A literature search major medical databases including terms “medication overuse headache”, “symptomatic medication overuse”, 2010 2020 was carried out. Three main strategies be recommended conducted parallel: education explanations about negative consequences overusing drugs, discontinuation overused medication, finally, preventive drug therapy non-pharmacological prevention. Medication remains a debated problem evidence for most effective treatment strategy needed.
